Across Nevada, renters are hurting. Over 50% of renters are cost burdened. Housing supply is down, houselessness is on the rise, sub-one-minute eviction hearings occur every day, and economists predict a recession is on the horizon. Tenants need a break.

Fortunately, the Nevada Housing Justice Alliance has been lobbying with lawmakers in Carson City to introduce long-overdue reforms which will:

  • Stabilize out-of-control rent increases
  • Force landlords to disclose all “hidden” or “junk” fees in lease agreements
  • Enforce habitability standards
  • Grant tenants the right to retaliate against slumlords when it is appropriate

Members also joined in solidarity with other housing groups to support redevelopment to increase the housing supply. Although increasing supply may depress rents, RSTU recognizes that supply + demand dynamics do not address the unique challenges faced by tenants, namely: unfair/unjust evictions, confusing relief programs, complicated legal processes, and the inherent disadvantages tenants face while bargaining with landlords.
